Billy Bob Thornton Faces Challenges While Filming Season 2 of 'Landman' with a Familiar Co-Star

"Maybe not every actor feels this way, but I find it hard because I'm quite codependent," he confessed. "Some of the toughest scenes were those where I had to be abrupt or even unkind to Sam. We've been close friends for decades, and he's like a father figure to me since we met back in the '80s." Thornton elaborated that having such a deep relationship with Elliott complicates the act of fully committing to certain emotional scenes. "Sometimes, knowing the other person makes it challenging to just go all out," he explained. "But ultimately, you have to give it your all. You need to go 100%."
He drew a parallel to his experience filming the 2003 dark comedy "Bad Santa," which also required him to portray a character who could be harsh towards younger actors. "I couldn’t really be sweet with the kids in that film," he remarked. "I made sure to explain this dynamic to both the young cast and their parents. That was definitely one of the most challenging aspects of that project."
The bond between Thornton and Elliott runs deep; they share a history that spans multiple projects. Notably, Thornton made a guest appearance in the "Yellowstone" spin-off "1883," where Elliott took on a leading role. Their camaraderie has roots in classic films like "Tombstone," where Elliott played Virgil Earp and Thornton portrayed Johnny Tyler. It’s evident that their friendship extends beyond the screen, which adds layers of complexity when they must engage in emotionally charged scenes like yelling at each other during "Landman."
When discussing his reaction upon learning that Elliott would portray his father in season 2, Thornton expressed heartfelt emotion. "I've admired Sam as both a person and an actor for so long that when I learned he’d take on that role, I told my wife and found myself in tears," he shared with CinemaBlend. Thornton was pleasantly surprised by the chemistry he shared with newer cast members, including Ali Larter, Michelle Randolph, and Jacob Lofland, who play Angela, Ainsley, and Cooper Norris, respectively. "None of us knew each other beforehand," he reflected. "Yet somehow, we clicked right from the beginning. This rapid chemistry speaks volumes about Taylor Sheridan, the show’s creator. He has an incredible talent for casting the right individuals for each role."
He further commended Sheridan for crafting distinct voices for each character, avoiding the common pitfall many writers fall into, where all characters sound alike. "Each person on this show stands out in their unique way. I truly appreciate that. When you have strong chemistry among characters who don’t share the same voice, it enhances the storytelling. One of Taylor's greatest achievements is creating very individualistic characters with their own distinct personalities."
