Get ready for more road disruptions in Exeter! The main artery into and out of the city is set to undergo major works, causing yet another closure just months after the last one.
Devon County Council is taking action to improve bus services, but it won't be without some short-term pain. They're installing new traffic lights and a traffic island on Heavitree Road, aiming to make bus journeys smoother and more reliable.
But here's where it gets controversial... This isn't the first time this road has been closed. Last year, from mid-September to mid-November, the road was shut for extended work on gas pipes. And now, just a few months later, it's happening again.
The county council assures us that the disruption will be worth it in the long run. They claim the new traffic signals will give buses priority at the crossroads, cutting down journey times and improving reliability.
Jacqi Hodgson, the Green Party leader and cabinet member for climate change, acknowledges the disruptions around Heavitree but believes these works will make a significant difference to bus journeys going forward.
And this is the part most people miss... The works will involve overnight closures from 2 February and daytime closures from 16 February, with the entire project expected to take four weeks. During this time, a diversion route will be in place, guiding drivers through Magdalen Road, Barrack Road, Topsham Road, Holloway Street, Magdalen Street, Western Way, and back to Heavitree Road.
Not only that, but resurfacing work on Heavitree Road will also be carried out during these road closures.
