The Geely EX5, a mid-size electric SUV, is about to get a major upgrade that will delight many Australian drivers. But here's the catch: it's an update that some might argue should have been there from the start.
This week, Geely EX5 owners will receive a software update over-the-air (OTA) that introduces Android Auto, a feature that has been conspicuously absent since the vehicle's launch in Australia in early 2025. This update is significant as it brings the EX5 in line with many of its competitors in the electric SUV market. And it's not just about Android Auto; the update also includes a host of other improvements.
The OTA update, which started rolling out on February 4, 2026, and will continue until February 9, can be easily downloaded using home or smartphone Wi-Fi, eliminating the need for a dealership visit. This convenience is a testament to the modern capabilities of Geely's vehicles.
The EX5, positioned as a rival to the Tesla Model Y, has been a significant player in the Australian market. Geely has also promised an OTA update for the related plug-in hybrid Starray EM-i before the end of March, ensuring that all its models stay up-to-date.
The update doesn't just stop at Android Auto. It also introduces three new low-speed Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) sounds: Classic, Galactic, and Constellation. These sounds are designed to improve safety by alerting pedestrians and other drivers, especially in low-speed environments.
Additionally, drivers can now customize their driving experience with personalized profiles. They can set their preferred drive mode, energy regeneration level, and the status of various safety features like lane-keep assist, emergency lane-keep assist, and driver fatigue detection. This level of customization is a welcome addition, allowing drivers to tailor the EX5 to their specific preferences.
The update also includes a notification sound for changing drive modes and a shortcut to tailgate control, further enhancing the user experience. And let's not forget, the EX5 now supports both wired and wireless connectivity for Android Auto, ensuring a seamless integration with your smartphone.
Interestingly, the EX5 initially lacked both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay when it was first introduced in Australia. Apple CarPlay was added in August 2025, but Android Auto remained absent until now. With these additions, the EX5 is now a more complete package, offering features that are almost standard in today's automotive market.
In terms of sales, the EX5 has been performing well. With 3944 units delivered in Australia last year, it outperformed other electric SUVs like the Leapmotor C10 and Deepal S07. However, it still has some way to go to catch up with the BYD Sealion 7, which sold over 13,000 units in the same period.
And this is where it gets intriguing: the EX5 is now a more compelling choice in its segment, especially with the addition of Android Auto. With its competitive pricing and feature set, it's a strong contender for those seeking an electric SUV. But will this update be enough to sway buyers away from other popular options?
